Build Your Fall Wardrobe

Tops
(Click picture for details)

I don't know about you, but sometimes when I am shopping, I find myself buying a lot of one particular item. In my case, it is shirts. The ratio of shirts to bottoms in my closet is about 20/1. I am slowly trying to build a more balanced wardrobe so that I can easily mix pieces and create brand new looks each day. I have compiled a few basic items in each category if you are looking to do the same thing. These pieces can all work together and you will for sure find that you won't have to wear the same thing twice.

Tops:
  • A white blouse is the key to any wardrobe. It can be worn so many ways and in every season of the year.
  • You can never have too many white blouses. Picking one with a fun collar is a simple way to add interest to your outfit.
  • Animal prints seem to be in style just about every single year. Having a blouse in a fun animal print can be an easy way to stay chic at the office and can transition to after-work drinks with friends.
  • A chambray shirt is a classic piece that can be dressed up or down.
  • A striped shirt is also a key basic. Stripes never go out of style and can be worn all year long.
  • A sweater is a no-brainer for fall. Pick a light-weight fabric so you won't burn up before the really cold weather hits.
Skirts

  • Full skirts look cute with bare legs or with tights in colder weather.
  • A pencil skirt is a must for any woman's wardrobe.
  • Pick a skirt in a fun print. I love to have at least one fun print hanging in my closet!
Pants

I am definitely a jeans girl, but lately I have been trying to add pants and skirts to my wardrobe. Jeans are a staple, but try adding a basic black pair of pants and a bright color pair as well. Pick a wild (or feminine) print pant to your wardrobe too. Not everything needs to be a solid color!

Jackets

Jackets:
  • Blazers are a great way to make a look appear more polished. Black is the first color I would suggest buying if you are looking for a blazer. Of course, adding a fun color (really any color will do) later on will only stretch your wardrobe even more.
  • A denim jacket is a classic piece that will be in style forever. It's casual and easy to wear.
  • A boucle jacket can be worn dressed up with a pencil skirt or can be dressed down with a pair of skinny jeans.
  • A leather motorcycle jacket brings a bit of edge to any look.
  • An army jacket would look great over a floral dress and ankle boots or would work well with jeans.

Shoes

Of course, no outfit is complete without a pair of shoes. I might have picked more in this category than in the others but a girl can never have too many shoes!

Check back next week to see how these pieces can work together. Have a great day!

Lunch With the Boys

Francesca's tunic, Seven jeans, F21 blazer, necklace, and bracelet, Nine West heels,
White House Black Market bag (old)

My boys and I ventured out to lunch this week despite the fact that my almost 12-month-old has a cold. I thought it would be a good idea for my three-year-old to get out of the house because he was starting to go stir crazy. What did he do? Tried to play with a painting hanging on the wall, ran and bounced on the seat in the booth, and sat under the table with his shoes off. Oh my goodness. Help.

Completely off the subject, did anyone watch Dancing With the Stars on Monday and Tuesday? As a dancer I am obsessed with any dance show (although I don't really care for So You Think You Can Dance). I've mentioned to my girls that I teach that it is my dream to dance with Mark Ballas on that show. So Mark, if you are reading this (why would you read a fashion blog?) then let's do a foxtrot!

It's Fall Y'all!

Since it is no longer a hundred degrees, I decided to pull out my fall decor. I have a wreath for spring and for Christmas but realized that I didn't have a fall one just yet. Last week I stopped by Hobby Lobby and picked up a few things to make a fall wreath. It was so easy! It literally consisted of me sticking the floral pieces in the twig wreath. It took thirty minutes and cost under fifty dollars. If you are wanting a wreath, I highly recommend making your own.

One of my favorite things about the months ahead is burning fall-inspired candles. Bath and Body Works has some really great candles if you are looking for some yummy scents. My two favorite fall candles are 'leaves' and 'sweet cinnamon pumpkin.

My absolute favorite part about fall is making pumpkin pie. My husband isn't the biggest fan of pumpkin so I get to eat the whole pie myself. It makes for the perfect mid-morning snack. Make a pot of coffee, grab a slice of pie, and catch up on some reading...Sounds pretty fabulous to me!

I hope you guys have a fabulous Tuesday!

Off To Church

F21 shirt, Gap skirt, TJ Maxx jacket, New York Transit shoes, Michael Kors bag,
Old Navy sunglasses, F21 watch and bracelets, Charming Charlie necklace

You never know if you will freeze or burn up in church. I thought I should bring my jacket but then at the last minute, changed my mind and left it at home.

I scored these snakeskin shoes for only 6 cents! With my DSW rewards card and an already awesome sale, I walked out with these heels for only a nickel and penny. You just can't pass up a sale like that! I hope you guys have an awesome day.

Girly

Asos skirt, Club L top, Target heels, F21 jewelry, sunglasses

I can't seem to stay away from leather (or faux leather) these days. I am loving this full skirt and thought that this peplum top was the perfect companion.

Starting to rain...

Have a fabulous weekend!

Booties For Fall: How To Wear Them

Booties2
(Click picture for item details)

I recently received a question from Mandy over at Orange Autumn asking how to wear booties for fall. There are so many different styles of ankle-cut boots out there so I thought I would devote a post on how to wear a few of them.

With boyfriend jeans, (see above) I like the idea of wearing a boot with a high heel. Since boyfriend jeans are slightly baggy in nature, I like to combat any frumpiness with a high heel. Wearing a boot that is low-cut on the ankle exposes just the right amount of skin on the leg.

When wearing a dress, I like the look of a boot that just barely covers the ankle bone.

Above the ankle booties are cute but I think they can be tricky to wear. There is nothing cuter than a full skater-style skirt and tights in the colder months of the year. Really, any height boot (ankle-height) would look cute with tights and a full skirt. However, I think a high heel in whatever ankle version you pick would look best.

Black Lace

F21 blouse, Limited skirt (borrowed from my sis), Old Navy sunglasses,
F21 bangles, Charming Charlie bracelet, handmade earrings, Tinley Road heels

Sometimes you can't go wrong with a simple blouse and pencil skirt. Adding a lace insert to the back of a blouse like this one keeps it from getting too boring.

I hope you guys have a fabulous day! I plan on spending the day cleaning my house like a maniac and trying to relax a little with magazines and a book.

Jagged

Old Navy blouse, pants, and sunglasses, Tinley Road heels, F21 jewelry

Lately I haven't been able to get enough of prints. These pants will be perfect for the fall but will also transition easily into the spring. I love pieces that I can wear year-round. Of course, in the South, you can pretty much wear cropped pants all year.

My dad is coming in today for a short visit. We plan on taking my three-year-old to see Finding Nemo. (It's back in the theater!) Check back Wednesday for a new outfit post. Until then, have a great couple of days!

Cropped

F21 blouse and bracelet, Francesca's pants, clutch, and earrings, Tinley Road heels,
sunglasses

Fall is finally here! (Well, it isn't one hundred degrees so anything below that feels like fall.) I couldn't resist breaking out some fall colors even though I technically can still wear shorts.

Have a great weekend!

Get The Look

I have always admired Olivia Palermo's style. She exudes a classic air but looks stylish all the same. This is a cute look that she wore during Fashion Week just a few days ago. I picked a few pieces to emulate the look she portrays.

For fun, I decided to use the animal print shorts and build two different outfits around them. Of course I love both looks but always tend to lean toward the edgier style. Which style do you like best?

Colorblocked Chevron

F21 blouse and jewelry, Seven jeans, Tinley Road heels, Michael Kors bag

I mentioned in a post last week that I usually wear mostly solid colors. I have been trying to add more prints to my wardrobe over the past few months. This F21 blouse is such a great blouse to pair with jeans for a casual look. The print is fun and I don't need too many accessories with such a busy pattern.

Sweet little man
Have a great day!

Sparkle

Sparkle
(Click picture for details)

I think sequins have come a long way over the past few years. When I last wore them, they were splashed all over my costumes for dance recitals or for danceline. After such showy pieces, I tried to remain snobby towards them but the priss-pot in me won and I am loving them right now.

It is possible to walk dangerously close to a costumey look if sequins are not worn properly. I think that the article of clothing covered in sequins should be the focal point. If you are wearing a sequin top, try to wear something less flashy on the bottom. The silver-sequined sweater pictured above would look cute with leather trousers. If leather isn't your thing, then jeans would always be a safe choice.

If sequins are a little much for you, maybe a pair of glitter flats would be a good choice. With a less shiny surface area concentrated on your feet, you will look chic and not so much like a disco ball.

Do you like sequins? How do you wear them?

A Pop of Pink

F21 blazer (similar), blouse (similar), and clutch, Worthington skirt, Tinley Road heels,
Francesca's earrings

After my polka dot post on Friday, I thought I would give the cute dots another shot. I am loving this print right now!

I thought I would try something new for future posts. Do you have a piece of clothing for fall that you are unsure about how to wear? Maybe it is a skirt that you fell in love with but nothing seems to look right with it. Whatever your issue, email me with your questions and I will feature it and my solution in one of my posts. If you have a blog I will put a link to your blog so that my readers can get to know you a little bit. Contact me today with your question! Have a great day!

Seeing Spots

Old Navy sweater and shorts, F21 jewelry (except for Charming Charlie necklace),
 Tinley Road heels

When it comes to clothing, I usually opt for solids. Maybe a stripe here and there or a floral print every now and then, but polka dots have been off of my radar until recently. After wearing this outfit, however, I might have been bitten by the polka dot bug.

Have a great weekend!
